Young People and Suicide
No suicide attempt should be dismissed or treated lightly!
Each year, almost 5,000 young people between the ages 15 to 24 take
their own lives. The rate of suicide for this age group has nearly
tripled since 1960, making it the third leading cause of death in
adolescents and the second leading cause of death among college-age
youth.
It’s important for parents, teachers and counselors to become
familiar with the facts about teens and young adults, especially
when it comes to depression and suicide. But the signs that a young
person is suicidal can sometimes be difficult to decipher.
For the sake of the young people in your life, please review the
fact sheets listed on the National Mental Health Association
website.
NMHA's Campaign for America's Mental Health works to raise
awareness that mental illnesses are common, real and treatable
illnesses and ensure that those most at-risk receive proper, timely
and effective treatment.
Call the National Mental Health Association for more information
and for referrals at 800-969-NMHA (6642).
If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, call
1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) or www.hopeline.com.
